WHAT IS AN AIR REGISTER?

Air registers are essential mechanical components to a buildingā€™s HVAC (heating, ventilation, air cooling) system. They cover a hole in the wall, floor or ceiling where the air duct enters the room. Their main function is to supply air. An air register has the capability of opening and closing the air flow by adjusting a damper (usually found at the bottom of the register).

WHAT IS AN AIR VENT COVER?

Similar to an air register, the air vent covers a hole in the wall of floor where the air duct enters the room. Unlike air registers, air vents do not have a damper to control air flow. They simply cover the air duct opening.Ā Ā

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AN AIR VENT COVER AND A REGISTER?

An air register has the capability of adjusting the air flow by opening and closing a damper or flaps, usually found at the bottom of the air register. An air vent cover, simply covers the duct without the added feature of adjusting air flow.Ā

HOW DO I KNOW IF I NEED A COVER OR A REGISTER?

Its totally up to you. If you open and close your air flow often, then you should get a register. Keep in mind, that by building codeĀ air ducts have air flow control capability inside the duct. Simply remove the vent cover,Ā reach into the duct work. You will find a damper to open or close the air flow for that specific duct opening.Ā
